According to the National Institute of Mental Health, 40 million adults in the US are affected by anxiety, and millions more are afflicted depression-related disorders. Overall, they estimate 18% of all adults have some form of mental illness. And most of the rest of us have too much stress in our lives, especially during the prime productivity and child-rearing ages of 18-55. Here are a few experiences and situations stressing us out these days – and how to handle them if they're wearing on you: 1. Too Much Information Do you continuously scroll through Instagram, jump on Facebook every time a notification pops up and monitor your Twitter feed while watching the (grim) news? You may be what the American Psychological Association pegs as a "constant checker," or someone who frequently checks social media and suffers from more stress as a result. "There is a proverb that says people perish for a lack of knowledge, which is very true," Lowe-Payne says. "But what we can often underappreciate is that we can also perish from having too much information as well." To cope, carve out time for "information breaks," suggests Lowe-Payne, who spends 30 minutes just being still and distraction-free every morning. 2. Pressure to Succeed in Life It used to be keeping up with the Joneses; now, it's keeping up with the hundreds if not thousands of internet strangers whose jobs, relationships and bodies are apparently better than yours. "Another source of stress for many … is the discrepancy between their ideal self and actual self; not being who they would like to be, or where they thought they would be at this time or age," says Rachel Goldman, a psychologist in New York City who specializes in health and wellness. "I think this also has perhaps become more relevant in recent years due to social media and how easy it is to compare oneself to others." 3. NOT PRIORITISING Along with trying to do too much there’s a shortage of prioritising, leading to feeling pulled in different directions in life without a real focus, goal, or purpose. This can result in feeling a lack of achievement or accomplishment and this, together with a heightened workload, is a recipe for burnout. 4. TRYING TO DO TOO MUCH Nowadays there’s a niche for everything (and Facebook and Instagram can attest to that), and it's as if we have to 'fit' into a niche: Busy professional scaling the corporate ladder and smashing glass ceilings? Check. Organised stay-at-home parent, whipping up Instagram-worthy bento boxes and tempering chocolate for the kids’ Easter school treats? Check. Adventurer and traveller snapping the sights of the most exotic, yet-to-be discovered destinations in the world? Check. The creatives, including the baristas who are into rainbow latte art, event planners who throw the perfect share-worthy children’s birthday parties, or the photographers whose pictures transport you to a different time and place? Check. The fitness and lifestyle bloggers/Instagrammers who make over their bodies in a few weeks and show off the fruits of their labour every moment of the day? Check. The problem is that we’re fooled into thinking that we need to do all of these, and all at the same time. Witness the rise of the superman or superwoman, yet in reality it isn't possible to simultaneously excel at work and home life, to travel the world yet nurture your work, to be creative and fit all at the same time. The pressure to maintain an image of perfection is surely exhausting. And yet, that’s what many of us buy into. Change Your Thoughts The basis of cognitive therapy is that the way you think about an event can shape the emotional response that you have in a given situation. For example, if you perceive a situation to be a ‘threat,’ you will have a different emotional (and therefore physical) response than if you viewed the same situation as a ‘challenge.’ This assertion has been supported by research as well. Looking at a situation from a new lens, rather than just dwelling on the negative, can help with anger management and lowering one’s stress response. Once you understand how your thoughts color your experiences, you can use this information to reduce stress with a process known as cognitive restructuring. 5. Eliminate Your Anger Triggers Figure out what are the biggest causes of stress in your life. Is it your job, your commute, your schoolwork? If you’re able to identify what they are, see if you’re able to eliminate them from your life, or at least reduce them. If you can’t identify the main causes of your stress, try keeping a stress journal.
